The next iteration

As I mentioned in a recent post, I wanted to migrate my website to WordPress, and I finally did. It took me a good couple of weeks to actually code the theme and I still think it’s not polished enough, but that’s the thing about personal projects – they are never really finished, are they?

You won’t see much of a difference design-wise. I wanted to keep the minimal look as much as possible, although I’m still thinking about adding some colours to it. I will experiment with that in the coming weeks.

There are also several ideas that I’d like to implement in the near future, such as my own showcase/gallery where I can show you some of the websites and design elements I really like. Plus I will be trying to update the blog on a regular basis, which has always been a challenge for me.

Lastly, the updated design is responsive, i.e. it adapts to the size of your device’s viewport. So if you go to the website on your smartphone or simply resize the browser you’re using right now, you should see the layout adapt to the new size. This is my first time building anything responsive, so bare in mind that not everything is going to work as flawlessly as it should.

Over the next few weeks I will be fixing things around, as well as adding new pages and posting new content. As always, any feedback is appreciated.

There are those points in every interactive designer’s career when he becomes fed up with producing the same set of graphics all over again for every website he designs. It could be the social network icons, gallery arrows or any number of his «signature» butterflies for the footer of each of his projects.

You don’t have to be an expert in the field to come across this particular issue. While not suitable for every case, the Web Symbols typeface can save a lot of time usually spent on searching for the right icons for your project.

If you’re not convinced that icon fonts are awesome, you should probably refer to this demonstration by Chris Coyier.

To be honest, I’m surprised (but very thankful!) this typeface is free.

Better Google Web Fonts

If you’ve ever thought about using web fonts, then you probably are familiar with Google Web Fonts. What I don’t like about it is that it’s flooded with typefaces that only have a single weight, making them unsuitable for body text. And since the Google service doesn’t let you filter those out, Soma Design have come up with a page listing all of the font families, so it’s easier for designers to pick the right font for the job.

I’ve submitted a major update for my One theme. When it passes moderation, you’ll notice a slightly different look. That’s because I recoded and restyled the theme from scratch. I also added some features such as:

custom Tagline next to your blog title;
custom Pages support;
Ask and Submit links in the footer.

Custom colours, fonts and the tagline can be set from the customization options. If you haven’t changed the HTML you should get the update automatically as soon as it’s live. If you have and are unsure if you’ll be able to update it without breaking something, feel free to contact me, I’ll provide assistance if needed.

Tumblr Custom Theme Framework v1.2

I’ve updated the code; it’s a little bit more semantic now as I’ve been using HTML5 for quite some time and learned a bit or two about the new tags. The pagination has been moved to the posts section because it just didn’t belong to the page footer. Speaking of the footer, I added support for Ask and Submit links, so if you want your theme to have them, they are right there – in the footer.
